Tarheel Tamaskan

About Us

Owned by John and Christina Bannow

Located in Northeast North Carolina, USA

Loving the look of wolves and understanding domesticating a wolf is not practical or is it fair to the wolf, we came across the Tamaskan Dog.  The Tamaskan Dog is a  new rare  breed of dog bred to look like a wolf. There was no wolf used in creating this breed of dog.  They are referred to as a "Wolf Dog without the Wolf."  We fell in love with the Tamaskan Dogs because of their look and temperament. We want to see the breed continue to grow and gain popularity. The breed has truly grown overseas and there are less than 50 Tamaskans in the USA.  Our Tamaskans turn heads wherever we go.  People want to know about them.  They may look like wolves but they would more than likely lick someone to death before they would ever show aggression or attack.

Tundra was born June, 2007 in Long Island New York, USA from J & J Kennels. Tundra is from the first litter born in the United States.  She has an excellent temperament, extremely smart, and loves to please her masters. She loves children and gets along well with other dogs.

Blaze was imported from Scotland in 2008 from Alba Kennels.  Blaze brings a fresh line to the USA for breeding.  He has a loving temperament, smart, and very cuddly.  Blaze is a very masculine dog, big boned, and boisterous.

Kana'Ti  was born Feb 4th, 2009.  Kana was from our OBX 09 Litter.  Her Litter name is Tarheel Corolla Dune.  We call her Kana"Ti from an old American Indian Folklore story. We decided to keep Kana'Ti to continue our breeding fro years to come.

Jaeger our newest import from Germany from Munsterland Tamaskans was born July 16th 2009.  (Jaeger) was named to give him his German roots meaning Hunter in German

About John (NTCA President)

John  is from Utica, Michigan and Graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1982.  John enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1984 and continued with an exciting career until his retirement 21 years later in 2005.  Most notably was his deployment to New York City following the September 11, 2001 tragedy followed by two deployments to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Currently John is an Independent Contractor working at Blackwater Worldwide teaching Force Protection to the U.S. Navy.  While in the U.S. Coast Guard he had the opportunity to work along side Law Enforcement K-9‘s in drug and bomb detection.  On occasion he was involved with dogs trained in scent (underwater body recovery). Having participated with working K- 9’s gave him an appreciation of what dogs are capable of learning.

John married Christina in 2006 and together they have four children, Ashley, Dylan, Brandyn, and Kaitlyn ages ranging from 18 to 09.

Dogs have always been a part of his life.  As a child he grew up with German Shepard’s and Newfoundland’s.  At a young age John attended obedience classes with his German Sheppard learning how to train dogs.  He has trained Tundra in obedience through the advanced level and she did exceptional in the classes.  Currently the Bannow’s have 4 dogs.  All our dogs are purebred Tamaskans and all from different lines.  John is an active member of the TDR and plans on breeding Tamaskans for years to come. With the military life behind him and being able to be home on a regular basis, he plans on learning more about dogs and being involved with the Tamaskan breed and its continued success.

About Tina (NTCA Secretary)

Christina (Tina) is from Middletown, Delaware.   Upon graduation from high school Tina went directly into the medical field studying to be a nurse.  During college she was certified as a nursing assistant for 2 years. After 2 years of school, Tina became a Registered Nurse in 1993.  Tina has worked in many areas of nursing and is currently attending school to further her degree.  She presently works as a cardiology nurse at our local hospital.  Tina has a desire to become a nurse educator.  She hopes to gain a degree in Art, as that is her minor in study.  Tina met John while living in North Carolina in 2005 and they married October 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Together they have four children Ashley, Dylan, Brandyn, and Kaitlyn.  Tina has the gift of being able to multi-task and do it efficiently such as working full time, going to college, and home life.

As a child, Tina grew up with Dachshunds as family pets.  Tina’s family also had a love for turtles.  At one time the family had around 50 land turtles and tortoises.  From a young age she was involved with her mother and the Delaware Herpetological Association.  Tina became very knowledgeable of herpetology and care for many species of turtles.  Tina raised and rescued turtles from early on in her childhood and still will stop and save a turtle from a busy roadway and find a safe home for them.  Tina has always had a love of science and animals.  She has hobbies such as a koi pond, turtle terrarium, and a large salt water fish tank.  Tina loves art and travel.  She loves different cultures, languages, food, and experiences with travel.  She believes in living life to the fullest.

Tina and John found the Tamaskan breed on the internet around January 2007.  After looking at the information available they decided that a Tamaskan was what their family needed.  Tina has always loved the majestic look of the wolf, but would not think it fair to ever tame a wild animal.  In August 2007 Tina drove from North Carolina to New York to pick up their first Tamaskan, Tundra.  Tina and John soon found out that the Tamaskan breed was an exceptional breed and wanted to learn all they can about the Tamaskan Dog.  In the spring of  2008  a male Tamaskan was imported from Scotland and became the Bannow's second Tamaskan.  Named  "Blaze" he is a large big boned boy and has a red wolf colored coat. Tina and John had their first litter of Tamaskan puppies in early 2009 and began their breeding program.  She believes in helping the cause and development of the Tamaskan breed into an exciting future expanding to the USA.
